There's something rather special about Harrogate at Christmas.
As the evenings draw in, the lights begin to twinkle around the town centre, shop windows take on their festive displays and our cafés, restaurants and bars become even more inviting. Add Christmas shopping, winter markets and the spectacular RHS Glow at Harlow Carr, and it's a lovely time of year to plan a few days away in Harrogate.
If you're thinking about a pre-Christmas escape to North Yorkshire, here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy Harrogate during the festive season.
Christmas shopping in Harrogate
One of the loveliest things about Christmas shopping in Harrogate is that you can leave the huge shopping centres behind.
The town has a wonderful mixture of familiar names and independent shops, making it somewhere you can quite happily spend a day browsing rather than simply racing through a Christmas shopping list.
Head towards the Montpellier Quarter for galleries, interiors, gifts, fashion and independents tucked among Harrogate's beautiful historic buildings. Wander through the town centre around James Street and West Park, or venture a little further towards Cold Bath Road, another favourite area for independent cafés and places to stop for lunch.
A trip to Harrogate wouldn't be complete without a visit to Bettys, but there are plenty of other independent cafés dotted around town too, such as Mama Doreen's Emporium. Christmas shopping suddenly feels much less like a chore when it can be punctuated with a good coffee, a leisurely lunch or perhaps a glass of something festive.
Harrogate Christmas markets and festive events
Although the traditional Harrogate Christmas Fayre isn't taking place in 2026, there is still plenty happening around the town over the Christmas period. Valley Gardens will be one of the focal points of this year's festivities.
- 5 and 6 December: Little Bird Made Christmas Market, Valley Gardens. Independent makers, artists, food producers and small businesses. A lovely place to look for something a little different, particularly if you prefer locally made gifts to the usual high-street offerings.
- 12 December: Ice Trail. Ice sculptures appear around the town centre for visitors to discover.
- 17 December to 3 January: Harrogate Ice Pavilion, a covered ice rink in Valley Gardens. Closed on Christmas Day.
It all makes a winter wander through town that little bit more magical.
Don't miss RHS Glow at Harlow Carr
One of our absolute favourites at Christmas is RHS Glow at Harlow Carr.
For 2026, Glow takes place on selected evenings from 26 November to 30 December, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of RHS Glow at Harlow Carr.
The gardens are transformed after dark with light, colour and sound, creating an illuminated trail through the beautiful grounds. This year's event includes eight new installations, alongside interactive displays and atmospheric soundscapes. There will also be festive food and drink along the route, and the RHS shop and garden centre will stay open later for a little extra Christmas shopping.
It's one of those outings that works equally well for couples, friends or families. Wrap up warm, pick up something hot to drink and enjoy the gardens in a completely different way.
Tickets for Glow need to be pre-booked, so it's worth organising this one in advance.

Make a weekend of it
The beauty of a Christmas break in Harrogate is that you don't need to fill every minute.
Spend the morning Christmas shopping, stop somewhere lovely for lunch, wander through Valley Gardens and then head back into town for cocktails or dinner. On another day, enjoy a leisurely morning before visiting Harlow Carr and seeing Glow as darkness falls.
And if you've finished the Christmas shopping altogether? Even better.
Harrogate is a wonderful base for exploring more of North Yorkshire in winter, whether that's a drive into the Yorkshire Dales, a visit to nearby Knaresborough or simply staying in town and enjoying a long lunch without feeling you ought to be anywhere else.
A cosy place to come home to

After a cold December day, there is something particularly nice about having your own little home to return to.
Harrogate Hidden Stay is a cosy, beautifully styled apartment within walking distance of Harrogate town centre. Instead of returning to a hotel room, you can kick off your shoes, put the log burner on and settle into the lounge for the evening. There's a fully equipped kitchen if you fancy staying in, a spacious bedroom, a separate work room and everything you need to make yourself properly at home.
That makes it just as suited to a relaxed Christmas shopping break for two as it is to a longer winter stay.
And with the town centre close enough to reach on foot, you can head out for shopping, afternoon tea, dinner or festive drinks and leave the car behind.
